Sometimes, the most profound growth begins when we dare to let go. In this interview, Melanie shares her deeply personal journey of loss, resilience, and starting over. Her story is a powerful reminder that transformation often begins with the courage to embrace change.
1. If you had to describe yourself in three words, which would you choose? And if you had to describe the essence of your work in three words, what would they be?
Melanie: Compassionate, Emphatic, Optimistic.
My work: Support, Transformation, Connection.

2. Reflecting on your first business, Sophie’s Universe, what was the moment you realized it was time to move on?
Sophie’s Universe was a natural baby care brand I created in honor of our daughter Sophie, who passed away ten years ago due to a heart failure. She was only five weeks old, but her life had a profound impact on me. The business was a way to channel my love for her into something meaningful. Over time, however, I felt a deep inner calling to support others more directly in their grief and healing journeys.
While it was bittersweet to let go of Sophie’s Universe, I realized that my next chapter would allow me to honor Sophie’s memory in a more transformative way.
3. How did you navigate the emotional and practical challenges of closing one chapter and opening another?
Closing Sophie’s Universe was an emotional process because it held so much of my heart. I allowed myself to grieve that ending while reflecting on how the inspiration behind it would continue to guide me. Practically, I focused on creating a clear vision for my new work and took intentional, small steps toward building it. Being an expat for 15 years and moving through different cultures also taught me resilience, which helped me embrace this transition with openness and courage.
4. What inspired you to step into the role of a transformative grief coach?
Losing Sophie was the most transformative experience of my life. It changed how I viewed the world and deepened my empathy for others navigating grief. As I processed my own loss, I realized how isolating grief can feel and how much support is needed in those moments. I wanted to create a space where people could feel seen, supported, and empowered to transform their pain into purpose. Becoming a transformative grief coach allows me to combine my personal journey with my professional skills to guide others on their path.
5. In your experience, why is it important to honor grief as part of personal transformation?
Grief is a natural and necessary response to loss—it’s a reflection of love and connection. Honoring it allows us to process our emotions, integrate the loss into our lives, and find meaning in the midst of pain. When we resist or suppress grief, it can create barriers to healing. By embracing it, we not only honor our loved ones but also uncover our own strength and capacity for growth.
6. What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your work in helping others through their transformative journeys?
The most fulfilling moments are when clients tell me they feel lighter, more hopeful, or more connected to themselves after working together. Watching someone rediscover their strength and sense of purpose, even in the midst of loss, is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to witness their resilience and to know that I’ve created a space where they can heal and grow.
7. How has your personal journey of change shaped the way you connect with your clients?
My experiences as an expat for 15 years, living in different cultures, and navigating my own grief after Sophie’s death have shaped me profoundly. Being originally from Germany and now living in Madrid with my husband and two daughters, I understand what it means to adapt to change and embrace uncertainty. These experiences allow me to meet my clients with empathy, authenticity, and a deep understanding of how transformative journeys—both emotional and practical—unfold.
8. What advice would you give to someone who feels stuck but is afraid to start something new?
Begin with one small, intentional step. Change doesn’t have to happen all at once. It’s okay to feel fear, but don’t let it paralyze you. Surround yourself with supportive people who understand your journey and remind yourself that growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, be patient and gentle with yourself as you navigate the process.
9. Can you share a specific story or moment when you felt your new business was truly aligned with your purpose?
One moment that stands out was when a client shared how our work together helped them reconnect with their inner strength and find a sense of hope they thought they had lost forever. They told me, "I never thought I’d be able to feel joy again, but now I know it’s possible." That moment confirmed for me that this work is not only aligned with my purpose but also a way to honor Sophie’s memory by helping others heal and transform.
10. Looking ahead, what vision do you have for your work and its impact in the next few years?
I envision creating a larger community of support, both online and in-person, where people can connect, share, and heal together. I’d love to develop workshops, retreats, and resources to help individuals navigate grief and transformation at their own pace. Ultimately, my goal is to normalize conversations around grief, empower people to find their strength, and inspire them to see loss as not just an end, but also the beginning of a new chapter.
